Poker Tournament
Poker Tournament
There is of course a lot of information available on the internet about poker and its many different related topics, but unfortunately a lot of the available information asserts incorrectly that poker is a game of luck. There is a big difference between a game of underlying luck such as craps or roulette and a game of underlying skill that also happens to contain a luck element. Poker is a game of skill at its core, but also happens to contain a large luck factor in the short term. There are many different forms of poker that are played in the world today, but poker tournaments appear to be gaining popularity in a lot of different places.
Poker Tournaments
While a relatively new invention in terms of the actual timeline of poker, tournaments have nevertheless instituted themselves as the dominant form of poker after the ring game structures. Ring games used to be the only form of poker around that people could play until tournaments were invented. The idea behind tournaments was that ring games were potentially never ending and some people wanted to play a game of poker that lasted a set amount of time with a definite winner at the end. The first truly major tournament in poker was the original World Series of Poker and since its creation over four decades ago the tournament variant has flourished.
Buy-Ins and Fees
Two of the terms that are associated exclusively with tournaments are buy-ins and fees. While both of these terms entail giving away some of your money, at the same time they refer to two different things and therefore it is important to distinguish between them.
When you are talking about buy-ins, what you are referring to are the actual costs of entering the tournament. In other words, the buy-in is the part of the final prize pool that you put up. Everybody is required to put up the same amount for the buy-in unless they have some sort of coupon or other waiver they can put in place of the buy-ins. That buy-in is effectively gone for them unless they are able to place in the money in the actual tournament.
Fees also refer to money that you have to pay, but not for the same reason as buy-ins. When a specific casino or house hosts a tournament, they are going to be incurring some costs. In order to cover these costs and also to get some extra profit for being the tournament hosts, they have fees that they extract from people. These fees are added onto the cost of the buy-in and that combined cost is what the person has to pay in order to get a seat in the tournament.
Conventions
The main idea of tournaments is that they have a finite amount of time to them and the way that is facilitated from a conventional standpoint is through the use of blind and ante structures that increase as time goes by. For example, a Texas Hold ‘Em game might start off with blinds of 25 and 50 with everyone having 10,000 in chips and as time goes by, those antes will be increased.
